Brazil Can Reduce Steel Decarbonization Costs, Says Brazil Iron President.

By Gabriel Rodrigues – 10/13/2026

Brazil Iron President Guy Saxton argued in an article published by CNN Infra that Brazil has the capacity to reduce the costs of decarbonizing steel production while increasing its competitiveness in the international market.

Saxton points out that the transition to low-carbon steel is a challenge faced by industries such as ArcelorMittal, which is investing €1.3 billion in the installation of an electric arc furnace in Dunkirk, although this could also increase production costs.

The article also mentions initiatives in regions such as the European Union, which is implementing a carbon levy on imports to impose additional charges on emissions associated with imported products, creating a more challenging market for steel that does not meet low-carbon criteria.

Saxton concludes by emphasizing that, with its high-quality resources and renewable energy generation capacity, Brazil is in a privileged position to produce iron with a lower carbon footprint, which can be used by steelmakers in Europe and other markets.
