Brazil Iron’s Ferro Verde Project Will Track CO₂ Emissions

By Tamires Oliveira – 09/24/2026

Brazil Iron has entered into a partnership with Bureau Veritas to structure the monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions expected from the Ferro Verde Project, in Bahia. The initiative will cover the entire production chain, from mining and ore processing to transportation, pelletizing, and HBI production (hot briquetted iron) using the Midrex process.

The work will aim to calculate the projected carbon intensity of the project and assess its relationship with the CBAM, a mechanism of the European Union that establishes a cost on carbon emissions associated with certain imported products.

Bureau Veritas, a French group specializing in inspection, testing, and certification, will also participate in structuring the data that will serve as the basis for future independent verification of emissions from the Ferro Verde Project.

Tracked Data

The methodology provides for the collection of information such as production volume, fuel and energy consumption, raw materials used, and documents supporting the records. The results are expected to be presented in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne of HBI, accompanied by the identification of the sources and methods used in the calculations.

The system will also make it possible to link each emissions-related piece of information to its respective origin, calculation methodology, and supporting documentation. In addition, the assumptions and system boundaries considered in the assessment of emissions will be established.

By monitoring all stages, Brazil Iron will be able to identify the points of highest emissions in the production chain and monitor the evolution of the operation’s environmental performance.

The HBI produced by the project will be destined for the steelmaking market. It is a high-quality metallic input used in steel production in electric arc furnaces.

CBAM Assessment

The first stage of the CBAM assessment, conducted based on data from the feasibility phase of the Ferro Verde Project, has already been completed. The study will make it possible to separate the total carbon footprint of the production chain from the emissions effectively considered within the European mechanism’s regulatory boundaries.

The results are expected to be used in negotiations with potential steelmaking customers, business partners, and vehicle manufacturers in Europe and Japan.

The initiative will also allow buyers to assess the carbon intensity of the HBI and estimate potential costs related to importing the product into the European market.

When a production facility does not provide its own emissions data, importers may rely on default values established by the European Commission. However, for actual operational data to be used, the calculations must follow the applicable methodology and be verified by an accredited body.

Bureau Veritas Seeks CBAM Accreditation

The European Commission has not yet published the list of accredited CBAM verifiers. Bureau Veritas has already applied for accreditation, and Brazil Iron expects the group to be among the first authorized bodies if the process is approved.

With independent verification, the emissions effectively recorded by Brazil Iron may be considered in the CBAM calculation. For European customers, the expectation is greater predictability regarding the environmental performance of the HBI and the costs associated with the product’s entry into the market.

Brazil Iron also plans to implement operational monitoring and conduct independent verifications during the annual reporting periods for CBAM. In this way, the projected data currently being used may gradually be replaced by actual operational records.

The start of operations of the Ferro Verde Project is scheduled for 2031. According to the company, the timeline is subject to obtaining financing, project development, and the necessary environmental approvals.
